Narrative- The Short Clip from Waterloo introduces several narrative strands. The main narrative for that certain episode is shown to be the arrival of a new student which is clearly hinted earlier on when two teachers are heard disccusing about a new enrollment on the register. Also, in the beginning the lines 'the smoke cleared up' connotes how the school had been evacuted due to a fire drill/alarm. Romantic relations are shown too which the new student is seen kissing another male which in turns causes another girl to react.
Character- The characters are typical of TV Drama around school life. In the first shot two teachers were seen alongside mass groups of students/teenagers and the arrival of a new character who may trigger a certain event.
Iconography- The costumes shown are school uniforms for the teenager but some wear various other clothing too which shows the lack of order in the school. A Mercedes car is also used for a student which allows some insight on their status or wealth.
Setting- The clip was all set Infront of a school hence the buildings which allows the sub genre to be easily shown

Narrative Theory Draft

Todorov stated that all narratives start off with an Equilibrium and then a disruption (Disequilibrium) where everything changes and then ends with a New Equilibrium where calm is restored. In my case study, Captain American: Civil War i can apply this theory because, at that start there is a moment of peace where the heroes are all friends and the area is calm however disaster strikes as there is an outbreak causing violence and tension between the characters. The new equilibrium is when the heroes resolve the problem.

Protagonist: Captain America
Antagonist:
Herione: Black Widow
Helper: Bucky (Sidekick)

Barthes Enigma Code: Why did Captain America split up from Iron man?
Barthes' Action Code: The group fights, explosions, robots flying, fighting scenes
These intrigue the auidence, the trailer makes the auidence question the movie a lot and the use of many Action Codes adds tension overall; highlights of the movie.

Representation

The representation of gender in Captain America:Civil War reinforces some traditional gender stereotypes. Chris Evans who plays the main character, Captain America, is a stereotypical male hero. He is shown to be quite strong as there are clips of him fighting/working out, intelligent and herioc. When the worst comes, Captain America choses a separate side from his friend Iron Man, played by Robert Downey another stereotypical male action hero, which is associated with how action heroes usually have to make tough decisions as they are strong and independent.Overall, the trailer shows the great strength that males have as most of the heroes are males In addition, there is a lack of female heroes shown in the trailer. The Black Widow is shown but doesn't have as much screen time as another male hero which could suggest that dangerous situations such as battling against others isn't really a position for woman to be in. However, this representation of females doesn't fully reinforce the typical view of a woman in Hollywoood action cinema. Another group is shown which is quite authoritative which is the government. The government is portrayed as a  group who has different ideas to the Avengers (the heroes) which connotes an idea of good vs evil, the heroes don't follow the orders of the government.

Eva

1)   As all movie posters have a focal image which helps introduce characters and narrative plot, I used the protagonist of my film to be the focus( use of a teenage girl) alongside a background setting the scene. Since my story revolves around murders which happens during when it rains , the girl is seen holding a pink umbrella which also adds onto  plot. I used an indication of when the film would be released with the producers and stars directly underneath to interest people who are already fond of their work. The tagline helps sum up and or add information to the film: Let me wash your pain with my tears. This allows the film to be indicated as a mystery/thriller genre and adds tension. The title ‘Project Despair’ is above all the text and near the focal image making it prominent and viewable. I then included the age rating in the corner- 15 as the narrative is slightly graphic/violent.
2)   The genre of my film is mystery and thriller. I have portrayed my genre through the use of the background the character is in. A dull empty road with a old fashioned road which gives an eerie effect. Also the character is seen holding an umbrella looking straight ahead with a expressionless face wearing school like clothing giving a sense of mystery.
3)    I have used the universal studios logo and also included positive reviews to give the film credibility. I also added institutional information in the billing box which will encourage an audience to go and see this film if they have enjoyed other films by the same director.

4)   There is synergy between my poster and storyboard because the main character from the central image in my poster also appears on the storyboard. The trailer starts off by showing the universal studios logo and also has various moments showing the main character holding the pink umbrella, which is seen in the poster. There are parts of the trailer which features various eerie/dangerous roads which are present in the background image of the poster.
5)  My trailer and poster challenge some streotypes. Usually there would be a male hero who would solve mysterious cases however in mine it's a teenage girl who is the protagonist. This also gives postive suggestions that not only boys can be seen as heroes. The girl is mean to be seem somewhat young which helps target towards a teenage auidence. I have also represented a different typing of ethnic group for the main character. This subverts hollywood stereotypes as usually white characters are played as the main character leaving a different ethnicity to be a villain or side character.

Film Poster & Trailer Analysis of Captain America Civil War

Central Image- The main characters in the film are shown on either side of the poster: Captain America and Iron Man. This is useful as it will immediately attract the audience who are fond of these characters so therefore would be interested in the movie itself.
Secondary Image/Background- The recognizable shield which belongs to Captain America is shown enlarged in the background allowing a clear vision of it. In addition, the other characters are shown lined alongside either Captain or Iron man.
Title/Tagline/Institution- The title is in a bold capital font in the center middle of the poster. 'Civil War' appearing as rustic steel which flows well with the theme of the poster with the words 'Captain America' in smaller font inside it. Doing this straight away tells the audience what the film is and who it is mainly based around hence the use of the main characters name in the Title. Above the title the institutional logo of 'Marvel' can be seen which will help gather an audience who have enjoyed films from them before. Near the bottom the tagline is seen: 'United We Stand. Divided We Fall' using two short phrases which help get an understanding of the movie as well as keeping it a secret for the audience.
Billing Box/Release Date/Website details- Both are seen at the bottom of the poster, the release date in bold capitals allowing a clear view of it. The website is near the other institutional logo on the bottom left 'facbook.com/CaptainAmerica'
Iconography- Firstly, the use of two actors who are well known for starring in several other marvel/action movies Chris Evans and Robert Downey JR is a huge way to draw the audience in as it can already be noticed as an action movie. To add on, the title gives away the fact there would be some sort of conflict 'Civil War' alongside the central image being two mainstream superheroes who are glaring at each other which could indicate tension. The whole poster has a metal, rustic feel to it giving off a very modernized yet adventurous look.
In my opinion I think the poster was a success as it shows the characters who will be in the movie as well as actors, giving off the genre easily and making it seem exciting in general.

There's a clear layout and opening to the trailer, it starts off with someone narrating and then shows the institutional logo 'Marvel'. It then follows by introducing some of the main characters including dialogue between them. During the middle end an event occurs with sound that communicates the genre of action, also displaying the release date. A series of fast cuts occur during the fighting/action scenes and the music intensifies during the fight but then cuts off at the end displaying the title of the movie. There's a mini clip introducing a final character and then showing social media, release date and so forth. This movie did not include the name of the people starring which could mean that they are already well known which they are. Chris Evans and Robert Downey JR are known for starring in marvel based movies which may suggest the audience is already fond to them.

Your chosen movie
1) What film have you chosen?
Captain America: Civil war

2) Why did you choose this film in particular?
I like movies created by marvel and I've liked the comic series which involves the protagonist in this film.

Institutional background
Use IMDB to find out the institutions behind your chosen film. Find your film, click on Company Credits and then look for the production company and UK distributor.

1) What was the film studio or production company behind your chosen film? E.g. Warner Brothers, Paramount etc.
Marvel Studios
2) Who was the distributor for the theatrical release of the film in the UK?
Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture, 2i Film, Cinecolor Films

No brand loyalty
1) What genre does your chosen film fit into?
Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

2) How can you tell it fits that genre? Be specific with reference to the trailer.
The trailer starts with scientists surrounding a circular tube with a red figure inside which already adds the theme of Sci-Fi as well the major use of robots and futuristic technology(the characters flying with their suits). It then changes to show a well known character- Captain America, who is clearly noticeable due to his famous red/blue and white colour scheme alongside the shield. From there the idea of adventure is portrayed through two bulky men who are shown to be strong physically who are then see at different locations. Finally the genre of action is evident everywhere throughout the trailer. Explosions, Chase scenes, the fall of an ally, use of weapons and various fight scenes.

3) Does your chosen film have any stars or a director that are known for that particular genre?
Robert Downey is known for being in other marvel produced movies, mainly being Iron man( Tony stark) in the avengers assemble series. In addition, Chris Evans usually acting as Captain America alongside Scarlett Johansson being Black Widow. The two directors, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, are known for two other famous marvel films.

It’s all a matter of timing
1) What was the UK release date for your chosen film?
29 April 2016

2) When did the first trailer appear on YouTube for your movie? Find the earliest example you can and embed it in your blog.

3) What other examples of marketing (teaser trailers, main trailers, newspaper or TV interviews etc.) can you find for your chosen film from before the film’s release date?

It’s a social thing
1) What was the word-of-mouth like for your chosen film? If you can’t find tweets (probably blocked) use the IMDB user review rating or the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating to judge whether the public have given the movie a good review.
"A good, disposable piece of FX-driven entertainment, even if it comes with the obligatory one-act storyline, lack of originality and 30-minute over-run."
"The motto of the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, appears to be: If you can make it happen, do it. Don't hold back."
"Anthony and Joe Russo's first-rate feature provides both invigorating action and genuine contemplation. It's an engaging superhero movie that actually ponders the human cost of doing all that cool stuff."
2) Find three quotes (no more than 25 words each) from user reviews of your movie to create a picture of what the public reaction to the film has been. Post them on your blog.
The word-of-mouth for the movie was a success, many people were highlighting how good the film was and the use of SFX.

Risky business
Use IMDB to find out the box office records for your chosen film. Find your film, click on Company Credits and then Box Office/Business. You may want to use the excellent website Box Office Mojo to find out the budget and box office success for the film.

1) What was the original budget for your chosen film?
$250,000,000

2) How much money did the film make in the opening weekend?
$179,139,142

3) How much money has the film made in total? (Look for the subheading ‘Gross’ which has the total box-office earnings listed).
$408,080,554

4) For a film to be considered a box office success, it needs to make at least two-and-a-half times the budget in box office takings. Using this method, was the film you have chosen a success? (Or, if it's a recent release, do you expect it to be a box office success?)
I don't think this movie was that much of a success as the original budget was $250m whereas after the total made was $408m which isn't double plus half.

Stars in their eyes
Research the stars and director for your chosen film.

1) What films has the director previously directed? Are they in the same or similar genres?
Other marvel movies which link in with this series of action/adventure

2) Who is the main star in the film?
Chris Evans

3) What other films has the main star appeared in? Are any of the films similar to the one you are researching?
He has appeared in other Marvel movies and acted as captain america in them too

4) Are the stars or the director or writer mentioned in the trailer for the film?
Yes

Insidious (2010)

Genre: Horror

N: A story about a family who are need of help as there son, Dalton, is left in a coma after being possessed by an unknown entity.

However it then changes to focusing on of the children who's seen to be hospitalised. After that it shows weird events occurring around the mother whilst she is alone in the house which then gives off the realisation that the house is haunted giving the genre of the movie as horror. More characters are introduced near the end, a women who is able to help the family get rid off the entity lurking in the house.

I: The usual haunted house alongside a supernatural being which in this case has possessed the child of the family. In the trailer it shows little snips of being inside a hospital and entering a paranormal world.
